Recenzii

This exquisite book - part-history, part-detective story - is as fascinating for the hidden histories it uncovers as for the process of conducting the research. From the forgotten corners of Hampton Court to the treasure trove of libraries, archives and architectural ruins, it takes the reader on a fascinating journey of discovery that keeps them guessing from the first page to the last
Never have the silences of history been shattered to such luminous effect. With a care and a joyous erudition that borders on the sorcerous, Braganza deciphers the coded messages of some of the most vital women of the past to deliver the smartest most exciting feminist history in generations. Equal parts rescue mission, detective story and revindication, this groundbreaking enchantment of a book should be in everyone's hands
Step aside, Robert Langdon, the real book detective is on the case! Chronicling adventures from solving a 500-year-old mystery to hunting the secrets of a library ghost to cracking the ciphers of a tragic queen, this book is learned, charming, and mischievous
I would follow Vanessa Braganza anywhere - into every archive, every overgrown garden, every battered manuscript. She reads a royal marriage in crisis from a pendant design and an illicit love affair from letters tangled on a book cover. The Secret Seekers leaves you certain that the women of Renaissance England were talking to us all along, in codes history had forgotten how to read. Braganza makes the past surrender its secrets
