Spre deosebire de explorările din The New Voices of Science Fiction, unde accentul cade pe diversitatea perspectivelor viitorului, The Quantum Thief se concentrează pe mecanica fină a unei spargeri imposibile și pe natura memoriei. Ritmul este unul alert, specific unui roman de tip 'heist', însă densitatea ideilor despre criptografie și nanotehnologie cere o atenție sporită din partea cititorului. Este o experiență de lectură care nu oferă explicații facile, ci construiește o lume în care magia este, de fapt, știință dusă la extrem.

Not the easiest read, no hand holding, but so refreshingly weird! Concepts-wise, it reminds me of Alastair Reynolds, with all the post-humans, consciousness uploading, exo-memory and so on. A key difference between the two authors is that Rajaniemi rarely uses info dumps, so you've got to use your deductive skills to work out what's what. In all fairness, with Reynolds you don't really feel like you're reading info dumps, but he's on another level. "The king of Mars can see everything, but there are places where he chooses not to look. Usually, the spaceport is one of them. But today, he is there in person, to kill an old friend." The Quantum Thief is hard not to like with lines like that.

Jean le Flambeur is a post-human criminal, mind burglar, confidence artist and trickster. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his exploits are known throughout the Heterarchy - from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to steal their thoughts, to stealing rare Earth antiques from the aristocrats of the Moving Cities of Mars.
Except that Jean made one mistake. Now he is condemned to play endless variations of a game-theoretic riddle in the vast virtual jail of the Axelrod Archons - the Dilemma Prison - against countless copies of himself.
Jean's routine of death, defection and cooperation is upset by the arrival of Mieli and her spidership, Perhonen. She offers him a chance to win back his freedom and the powers of his old self - in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed . . .
