Matthew Gregory Lewis, who is more commonly known as M.G Lewis (1775-1818) was an English writer, diplomat, and politician. Predominantly known for his work in the gothic horror genre, M.G Lewis wrote novels, poems, short stories, and works of nonfiction. Because his work often featured graphic depictions of sex and violence, Lewis gained almost an infamous reputation; his most popular novel, The Monk: A Romance was banned in England but still became a best-selling novel. Lewis was beloved for his bold and scandalous novels. His sinister writing has earned him a legacy of being a major figure in gothic fiction.
