Elite mental performance strategies from the Green Bay Packers' team performance psychologist
In The Mind Comes First: Mastering the Mental Foundations of Optimal Performance, Christopher M. Carr, PhD, the Green Bay Packers' director of performance psychology, draws on three decades of work with professional athletes, Olympic competitors, Navy officer candidates, and corporate leaders. This book translates complex psychological principles into actionable strategies that readers can implement immediately to achieve consistent excellence.
The Mind Comes First uses a progressive three-section structure, building from foundational self-awareness through practical mental skills development to overcoming challenges and setbacks. Through case studies from Carr's work with professional athletes, Olympic gold medalists, and military personnel, readers learn techniques for achieving flow states, visualizing success in high-stakes moments, and developing confidence, composure, and concentration on demand.
Readers will also find:

• Concrete psychological frameworks for building the mental discipline that separates consistently excellent performers from the merely talented in any domain

• Engaging case studies drawn from collegiate and professional sports, Olympic competition, military operations, and corporate leadership settings across multiple disciplines

• Practical exercises for mental rehearsal of critical negotiations, high-stakes presentations, and championship-level athletic performances under pressure

• Strategies for accessing flow states and peak zone experiences developed through decades of work with elite athletes across multiple professional leagues

• A personalized approach to psychological skill-building applicable across domains, from the boardroom to the operating room and playing field

Written for professional and Olympic athletes, collegiate competitors, military personnel, corporate executives, performing artists, physicians, attorneys, and anyone pursuing optimal performance, The Mind Comes First provides the same mental frameworks used by elite performers across the highest levels of sport and professional achievement.
