Suntem de părere că miza fundamentală a volumului The Martian Chronicles nu rezidă în cucerirea tehnologică a spațiului, ci în fragilitatea psihologică a coloniștilor care, deși traversează hăul cosmic, nu reușesc să se desprindă de propriile traume și ambiții distructive. Descoperim aici o lume marțiană construită nu din metal și circuite, ci din piloni de cristal și mări fosilizate, un peisaj oniric ce servește drept oglindă pentru o umanitate aflată în pragul extincției pe Terra. Bradbury refuză clișeul invaziei extraterestre, propunând în schimb o viziune prismatică în care noi suntem „străinii” care perturbă liniștea unei planete muribunde. Sistemul tehnologic prezentat este unul voit poetic, unde rachetele poartă cu ele nu doar echipamente, ci și prejudecățile unei lumi devastate de războiul atomic. Ray Bradbury (1920–2012) was the author of more than three dozen books, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as hundreds of short stories. He wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV, including the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby Dick and the Emmy Award–winning teleplay The Halloween Tree, and adapted for television sixty-five of his stories for The Ray Bradbury Theater. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, and numerous other honors.

The first men were few. Most succumbed to a disease they called the Great Loneliness when they saw their home planet dwindle to the size of a pin dot. Those few that survived found no welcome.
