The Last Tycoon

Autor F. Scott Fitzgerald Phil Gigante, Nick Archer
en Limba Engleză CD-Audio – 21 feb 2016

F. Scott Fitzgerald's last and unfinished novel, a gorgeous, excruciating, heady tale based on his painful experiences working as a Hollywood screenwriter

Haunted by the death of his wife, 1930s studio head Monroe Stahr works 18-hour days, crammed with meetings, set visits, script brainstorms, and screenings. The last of the princes, he's making the studio millions and seems bulletproof. Then one day, an earthquake breaks two water mains, sending a river of water through the studio. And with it, the huge head of the goddess Shiva a film prop. Inspecting the damage, Stahr sees the head float by and on it two women, one of them the mesmerizing Kathleen.

It's the beginning of a love affair that will destroy him.

A mesmerising and lavish story of Hollywood's Golden Age from the author of The Great Gatsby.

1930s Hollywood. The depression has receded, the studios are booming, and the glitz and glamour are bewitching. But for Cecilia Brady, this is just life. That is, until she meets Monroe Stahr...

Stahr is at the centre of it all. A genius production chief in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Cecilia is mesmerised. But Stahr's attentions are caught elsewhere - in the arms of a mysterious woman - and Cecilia watches as a passionate but doomed love affair unfolds.

Little by little, Stahr loses his grasp on this fickle world. Fighting with his writers and declaring war on the Union bosses, he is saved from tragedy only by Fitzgerald's own death.

Although THE LAST TYCOON will forever remain unfinished, it is a work of unrivalled potential, exposing a Hollywood we no longer know. One of stars in ascension, and the great picture men in free fall.

Recenzii

It would have been Fitzgerald's best novel . . . Even in this truncated form it not only makes absorbing reading; it is the best piece of creative writing that we have about one phase of American life - Hollywood and the movies
Wonderful . . . a novel about Hollywood, written from the inside
His talent was as natural as the pattern that was made by the dust on a butterfly's wings

Notă biografică

F. Scott Fizgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University, which he left in 1917 to join the army. He was said to have epitomized the Jazz Age, which he himself defined as 'a generation grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'. In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their traumatic marriage and her subsequent breakdowns became the leading influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Last Tycoon (his last and unfinished work). Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940.
