The Humanual, Volume 5: The Humanual, cartea 5

Autor Adam Blak
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 sep 2026
You understand your body, your mind, the people around you, and the systems those people built. One question remains, and it is the one the whole series has been circling since page one: what is any of this for?
The Compass is the fifth and final volume of The Humanual, and it is the most personal. It asks why a survival machine generates a being that wonders about meaning, then lays out the menu of answers humans have come up with, from the great religious traditions to Stoicism, existentialism, Buddhism, secular humanism, and the honest version of nihilism, treating each with respect and none with deference. It helps you find the values you actually hold rather than the ones you were issued, teaches ethical reasoning without handing down rules, and takes purpose, work, creativity, play, and awe seriously as the parts of a life that make it worth maintaining.
Then it turns to the weight: suffering, aging, and the fact that you are going to die, treated not as problems to be solved but as the conditions that make meaning urgent. It closes with the long view, what a life gives back, and a final message from the manual to its reader.
Gentler than the earlier volumes but no less funny, The Compass is for anyone who has ever lain awake at 3 a.m. with the big questions. The questions are fine. You are supposed to have them. Here is some company.

Notă biografică

Adam Blak was issued a human body in the usual way, without paperwork, and has spent the years since trying to work out how it operates. The Humanual is his notes. Every claim in it was checked against the evidence, which is more than can be said for most of what you were told about being a person. He is also the author of The Good Work, a shorter book about how people might treat one another, and he lives near Philadelphia, where he is, at the time of writing, still a human.
