In the 1880s, the Chicago Cubs--then known as the White Stockings--dominated professional baseball. It was an era of triumph, controversy, and change, with leaders such as William Hulbert, Albert Spalding, and Adrian "Cap" Anson navigating the team through fierce rivalries and challenges in an evolving professional league. At the heart of the White Stockings were the players themselves. Frank "Silver" Flint was a fearless and rugged catcher who toughened his palms by rubbing them with a mixture of alcohol, rock salt, and lemon juice. Hard-driving Mike Kelly, who would "forget" to touch third base while trying to score from second, was known for his carousing lifestyle as much as for his baseball prowess.
