Autor Maru Gonzalez, Michael Kokozos, Christy M. Byrden Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 mai 2027
In this interactive, hands-on resource, Drs. Maru Gonzalez, Michael Kokozos, and Christy Byrd show how community-engaged teaching goes far beyond canned food drives, field trips, and one-off service learning projects. They provide the nuts and bolts you need to cultivate equitable classroom-community partnerships by nurturing connection, identifying needs and assets, sharing power, and practicing reciprocity. They also reveal how to secure buy-in from colleagues, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, identify funding sources, and evaluate impact.
Each chapter offers practical teaching tips, reflective prompts, firsthand practitioner accounts, and activities that model ethical community-engaged pedagogy, across any setting. No matter what subject you teach, you’ll come away with loads of ideas for establishing and sustaining dynamic learning environments—and the tools to start tomorrow!

Recenzii
"Engaged learning is increasingly understood as a key contributor to student success, as well as the public mission of higher education. Yet one of the most frequent questions asked by community-engaged scholars, teachers, and practitioners is, "How do I do this work in ways that honor the needs of the academy and contribute to positive community impact?" By centering community partnerships, The Community-Engaged Classroom is a timely and much-needed primer that brings engaged learning into the classroom and out into the world in ways that are accessible, sustainable, and anchored in real-world examples that all communities face."
—Kwesi Brookins, PhD, Vice Provost for University Outreach and Engagement and Professor, Ecological-Community Psychology, Michigan State University
"The Community-Engaged Classroom is a powerful reminder that the most meaningful learning happens when classrooms extend beyond the traditional four walls and into the heart of the community. Drs. Gonzalez, Kokozos, and Byrd provide educators with an inspiring and practical roadmap for cultivating authentic partnerships that elevate student voice, strengthen families, and transform communities. This is an essential resource for anyone committed to preparing students not just to perform well on tests, but for life."
—Stephen Nobles, Department of Innovation, Strategy, and Governance, Clarke County School District, 2025 TED Next Speaker, Lead Organizer, TEDxCCSD Youth
"The Community-Engaged Classroom offers practical guidance for educators seeking to build authentic community partnerships and create meaningful learning experiences for students. It is a valuable resource for turning the ideals of community engagement into actionable practice."
—Kimberly Allen, PhD, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Virginia Tech and co-author of Family Life Coaching Handbook
"What sets this book apart is that it comes from a team who has actually done this work, not just studied it, so the guidance feels grounded, specific, and achievable rather than aspirational. The Community Engaged Classroom shows teachers how to move from good intentions to real trust and mutual empowerment, though as the authors make clear, doing it well takes real thought and care, not shortcuts. I found myself immediately seeing how these approaches aimed at K-12 teachers apply to my own community engagement work at the college level."
—Nicole Breazeale, Associate Extension Professor of Community Development, University of Kentucky
"In times marked by increasing polarization and precarity, The Community-Engaged Classroom offers a compelling vision for bringing people together through innovative educational practice. It challenges educators to imagine community engagement not as an add-on to teaching, but as a meaningful way of creating inclusive, responsive classrooms where student voices can extend beyond the classroom and into the communities they call home. Through practical strategies, reflective questions, real-world examples, and attention to sustainability and evaluation, this book offers a powerful framework for transforming classrooms into spaces of community partnership, student agency, and collective action."
