Lady Dunbar of Mochrum bred and studied Chows for many years, and The Chow Chow, published in 1914, is the earliest monograph on them: history and origins, characteristics, the colours - with particular attention to the blue variety she was known for - management, ailments, breeding and rearing, the coat, training, and the breed as a sporting dog. The breed had come to Britain through the East India trade, gathered royal attention in the 1880s and had a club of its own by 1895, so a 1914 monograph catches it just as the English fancy was taking it seriously.
