The Case for a Harm Reduction Approach: Beyond One-Size-Fits-All Addiction Treatment

Autor Sheila P. Vakharia, Heather Sophia Lee
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 11 feb 2027
This book advocates for harm reduction as a humanizing overarching approach to substance use and addiction care, one that can increase access to and engagement in treatment and other services.
In this book, the authors lay out the challenges and limitations of the abstinence-only approach to treatment and care, which can lead to disillusioned clients and frustrated providers. Based on interviews conducted at two harm reduction programs, this book describes how the approach demarginalized clients and led them to voluntarily engage in services, thereby resulting in improved quality of life, hopeful future goals and plans, better social functioning, and reduced substance use. In their own words, clients and providers described what uniquely characterized a harm reduction approach and how it as an alternative, supplement, or complement to existing abstinence-only options.
This important volume contributes key information critical for training future generations of social workers, healthcare providers, and addiction specialists.

Recenzii

“A compelling and persuasive guide to integrating harm reduction into addiction care, including treatment.”
Maia Szalavitz, author of Undoing Drugs: How Harm Reduction Is Changing the Future of Drugs and Addiction; and contributing opinion writer for the New York Times
"I have spent nearly forty years in the addiction field, and it is long past time for us to align practice with the science. Too many programs still rely on one-size-fits-all, abstinence-only models while blaming patients for not fitting them. Vakharia and Lee offer something different: a clear, compassionate vision of harm reduction that meets people where they are not where we want them to be. This book is an essential roadmap for that change.”
Dee-Dee Stout, author of Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking & Screaming: Stories of Radically Loving People who use Drugs (2nd Ed.); and harm reduction coach, counsellor, and trainer
“Combining compelling research with the lived experiences of harm reduction providers and the people they serve, Vakharia and Lee present an equally persuasive vision of harm reduction as a more humane, evidence-informed continuum of care that engages people wherever they are, supports their own goals for positive change, and dramatically improves opportunities for engagement, retention, and recovery. Grounded in science, compassion, and respect for the dignity and autonomy of every person, this book offers an essential roadmap for transforming addiction care. It belongs on the bookshelf of every clinician, policymaker, student, family member, and anyone committed to helping people who struggle with substance use.”
Andrew Tatarsky, author of Harm Reduction Psychotherapy: A New Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Problems; and Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapist
"The authors’ conclusion is hard to argue with: Harm reduction as an underlying philosophy, policy, and treatment design is what is needed to bring compassionate and effective care to the millions of people affected by drug use.
This book builds on the decades of evidence to support such a claim. Chapters on policy and the history of harm reduction give context, but the richness and the persuasiveness is left to the clients themselves. They emphasize how harm reduction services have helped them regain a sense of dignity, confidence, and develop the skills to change their relationship with drugs."
Patt Denning, PhD, Co-Founder, Director of Clinical Services (Emerita), Harm Reduction Therapy Center, San Francisco
