The Capacity Shift: How to Combine Lean Management Principles, High-Reliability Organization (HRO) Theory, and Intent-Based Leadership

Autor Torsten Dederichs
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 28 dec 2026
Modern organizations suffer from a pervasive organizational fracture: Safety, Quality, and Operational Excellence are treated as separate silos, each with its own metrics, bureaucracy, and priorities. Most companies try to manage these areas through control and compliance, pursuing the ideal of “Zero” (zero accidents, zero defects). This book argues that “Zero” is not a summit but a dangerous plateau -- one that reinforces a reactive, dependent culture. As complexity increases, compliance-driven systems inevitably fail because they depend on obedience rather than ownership. This book introduces a new operating paradigm built on the integration of Lean Management principles, High Reliability Organization (HRO) theory, and Intent Based Leadership. It asserts that the practices required to keep people safe are the same practices required to achieve operational excellence. By shifting the focus from counting the absence of failure (lagging indicators) to building the presence of capacity (leading cultural indicators such as psychological safety and reflexivity), leaders can cultivate an interdependent culture. The book lays out a structured roadmap in four acts. It diagnoses the compliance trap created by the illusion of measurability (Acts I and II), introduces a counter model grounded in clarity over control (Act III), and presents a practical behavioral framework to help leaders overcome their “Hero Reflex” and enable decentralized decision making (Act IV). Ultimately, it challenges traditional command and control structures by showing that real control in complex systems emerges only through distributed authority -- transforming the leader’s role from scorekeeper to gardener of capacity.

Notă biografică

Torsten Dederichs is an executive in the energy sector with over 20 years of experience bridging the gap between shop-floor reality and boardroom strategy. Starting his career as an apprentice and rising to Head of Performance at Wien Energie, he has led lean transformations, managed power plants, and guided international consulting projects. He is the author of Lean Maintenance (Taylor & Francis) and combines deep technical expertise in high-reliability organizations with a radical human-centric leadership philosophy. He writes from the conviction that safety is not a metric to be counted, but a capacity to be built.
