Apreciem modul în care N. K. Jemisin redefinește complet structura narativă a genului fantasy prin vocea sa distinctă, care reușește să fie în același timp intimă și apocaliptică. Trilogia Broken Earth Trilogy nu se mulțumește să prezinte un alt conflict între bine și rău, ci ne introduce într-o lume numită Stillness, unde pământul este un organism ostil, iar supraviețuirea depinde de 'orogeni' — indivizi capabili să manipuleze energia seismică. Ceea ce ne-a impresionat este modul în care autoarea folosește perspectiva persoanei a doua pentru a ancora cititorul direct în trauma și reziliența personajului principal, Essun.

Construcția lumii este remarcabilă prin sistemul său 'tehno-magic' legat de geologie. În loc de baghete sau incantații, avem presiune tectonică, straturi de cenușă care blotează soarele și 'Anale' care păstrează memoria catastrofelor trecute. Ca și în The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N. K. Jemisin explorează teme precum marginalizarea și puterea zeilor sau a entităților cvasi-divine, dar dintr-o perspectivă mult mai viscerală și matură, unde mediul înconjurător devine el însuși un antagonist activ. Dacă în alte serii de referință magia este un privilegiu, aici este un blestem care forțează personajele să aleagă între salvarea unei lumi care le urăște sau distrugerea ei totală. Ritmul este susținut de urgența sfârșitului lumii, dar forța reală a scriiturii rezidă în complexitatea morală a deciziilor luate de Essun și fiica sa, Nassun.
