Recenzii
Williams Fayne's The Blackish Press is a sorely needed addition to scholarship on how Black journalism continues to evolve over the ages. Her careful consideration of economic, technological, and political influences addresses the complexities of Black media ecosystems today - from the digital transitions of stalwart publications like Ebony and Jet to the emergence of hyperlocal digital offerings - that are linked by a common history and yet divergent cultures. This book is essential for any study of Black media and journalism in the 21st century.
The Blackish Press offers a unique and fresh perspective on Black news outlets in the twenty-first century, creatively redefining Black media and its audience. Miya Williams Fayne asks important and necessary questions about ownership and what constitutes the Black press at a critical moment when public trust in institutions is low. Anyone interested in the past, present, and future of the Black press will be rewarded by reading this excellent book.
The Blackish Press offers critical insights on the rise of a decentralized digital Black press and how it requires new ways of thinking about the relationship between media outlets, ownership, advocacy, entertainment, and representation. Engaging with contemporary debates on objectivity, news avoidance, and efforts to grapple with racism in mainstream news organizations, Williams Fayne thoughtfully chronicles how the Black press has nudged the US toward democracy by contributing to more representative public spheres.
