THE THIRD EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER, REVISED AND UPDATED

'A rich, galloping narrative that spans the Arab world...outstanding, gripping and exuberant...full of flamboyant character sketches, witty asides and magisterial scholarship, that explains much of what we need to know about the world today' Simon Sebag Montefiore

'Anyone who seeks to understand why the Islamic world bears a grudge against the West should read The Arabs' Sir Alaistair Horne

Starting with the Ottoman conquests in the sixteenth century, this landmark book follows the story of the Arabs through the era of European imperialism and the Superpower rivalries of the Cold War, to the present age of unipolar American power. Drawing on the writings and eyewitness accounts of those who lived through the tumultuous years of Arab history,The Arabsbalances different voices - politicians, intellectuals, students, men and women, poets and novelists, famous, infamous and the completely unknown - to give a rich, complex sense of life over nearly five centuries.

Rogan's book is remarkable for its geographical sweep, covering the Arab world from North Africa through the Arabian Peninsula, and for the depth in which it explores every facet of modern Arab history. Charting the evolution of Arab identity from Ottomanism to Arabism to Islamism, it covers themes including the conflict between national independence and foreign domination, the Arab-Israeli struggle and the peace process, Abdel Nasser and the rise of Arab Nationalism, the political and economic power of oil and the conflict between secular and Islamic values.

This multilayered, fascinating and definitive work is the essential guide to understanding the history of the modern Arab world - and its future.

Recenzii

"Afascinating [story], and exceedingly well told.... What makes this book particularlyuseful is the way it situates [the Arab-Israeli conflict] within the widercontext of the Arabs' long, and still unsuccessful, struggle to come to moreequal terms with the West.... An exemplary history."—Economist
"Anoutstanding, gripping and exuberant narrative, full of flamboyant charactersketches, witty asides and magisterial scholarship, that explains much of whatwe need to know about the world today."—Simon Sebag Montefiore, Financial Times
"Anentertaining, gracefully written, and eye-opening look at a diverse peoplewhose history, culture and character are often badly misunderstood (if notactively distorted) here in the United States. Read it. You'll learn a lot."—Stephen M. Walt, ForeignPolicy.com
"[Rogan]provides a prism through which the lay Westerner can view five centuries oftumult, zealotry, and complication.... Deeply erudite and distinctly humane,Rogan consistently plays up (and never papers over) the bountiful East-Westparallels."—Atlantic
"Readableand reliable, this sweeping survey balances the unity of a coherent story withdue attention to detail. As such, Rogan's contribution belongs in the companyof the earlier classics by Hitti and Hourani."—Foreign Affairs
"Roganmanages the somewhat staggering feat of outlining nearly 500 years of historyin a way that is neither cursory nor overwhelming--and is based in theexperiences of the people themselves.... [Rogan's] ability to gather andsynthesize such a wealth of information, showing both the humanity and malicepresent on all sides, while neither bowing to nor accepting conventionalwisdom, is truly remarkable. It's to be hoped that America's decision makersget their hands on a copy of The Arabs--and take very good notes."—Dallas Morning News
"Astraightforward, careful primer on Arab political history from the rise of theOttoman Empire to the forging of modern fundamentalist Islamic entities.... Asweeping history."—Kirkus Reviews
"Anexcellent book.... Eugene Rogan has written an authoritative and wide-ranginghistory."—Times Literary Supplement
"Therecan be few books better than this one to put in context the ongoing proteststhroughout the Middle East."—Guardian (UK)
"Aneloquent grand narrative of optimism and despair.... Rogan's book is evocative, timely and illuminating for the general reader. The individual Arab voices thathe uses to structure the narrative--ordinary people, intellectuals, activistsand political leaders--provide a much needed insider perspective, whichnuances stereotypical images of the Arab world in the media. Moreover, TheArabs discloses unfamiliar and unsettling truths on the vexed and oftenover-simplified relationship between the Arab world and its historical'others,' Europe, the west and Israel. Compelling as it is in its own right, this is indeed food for thought also for its relevance to world affairs atlarge."—BBC History Magazine
"EugeneRogan writes about the Middle East with exceptional empathy, wisdom, andinsight. His book is a landmark in scholarship on this complex andcontroversial region. Western scholars have written extensively about theMiddle East but mostly from the outside looking in. The Arabs often feature intheir accounts as mere driftwood on the sea of international affairs. Rogan, bycontrast, has narrated the history of the region over the last five centuriesfrom the inside looking out. He tells the history of the Arabs from their ownperspective, using an impressive range of Arabic sources. It is a fascinatingstory and in Eugene Rogan it has found its most gifted chronicler."—Avi Shlaim, author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World
"Amasterful, thorough, and well-written survey of the entire sweep of modern Arabhistory. Full of lively vignettes but comprehensive at the same time, this bookwill be of great interest both to general readers and students of the Arabworld."—Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies, Columbia University
"Thishistory focuses on the last 100 years of Arab politics, offering the perfectprimer for anyone following the news right now."—Daily Telegraph (UK)
"Anyonewho seeks to understand why the Islamic world bears a grudge against the Westshould read The Arabs. Few scholars know their subject better thanEugene Rogan, while even fewer are capable of rendering so complex a subject soengagingly readable. It is a joy to open, and a deprivation to put down."—Sir Alistair Horne, author of A Savage War of Peace
"Nobetter guide to the modern history of the Arab world could be found than EugeneRogan. He is attentive as much to the insider accounts in Arab memoirs as tothe imperial schemes hatched in drawing rooms in Paris and London, as concernedwith popular movements and uprisings as with elite reformism, and unafraid toconfront directly and with the best evidence and documentation available thevexed issues of colonialism, Orientalism, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Roganachieves a rare, and realistic synoptic vision of the way in which Arabness hasbeen shaped by both indigenous forces and Western imperial ones. In recentyears, the United States has attempted to rule Arabs while carefully avoidingknowing anything about them, a strategy that has yielded all too predictableresults. Those in the West who aspire to engage the Arab world in moreproductive ways in the future will find Rogan an indispensable companion."—Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History, University of Michigan, and author of Engaging the Muslim World
"Witheloquence, verve, and understanding, Eugene Rogan rightly reminds us that theworld, and the Arabs themselves, need to remember the past. If we are to builda better relationship between the Arab world and the West, if we are to avoidmaking the same mistakes again and again, we need to know Arab history from itsmany high points to its low ones. I can think of no better guide on thiscrucially important journey than The Arabs."—Margaret MacMillan, author of Paris 1919 and Nixon and Mao
