The Alarm Within
Autor Brad R Smedleyen Limba Engleză Paperback – sep 2026
Anxiety, anger, withdrawal, shame, perfectionism, and the need for control can create real difficulties in our lives and relationships. But these responses did not arise without reason. Often, they began as intelligent attempts to protect something vulnerable-your safety, dignity, belonging, identity, or connection with others.
In The Alarm Within, licensed therapist and Certified EMDR Therapist Brad R. Smedley offers a compassionate, biblically grounded exploration of trauma, attachment, the nervous system, and healing. Drawing from decades of professional experience, personal stories, and Christian hope, he invites readers to move beyond shame and begin asking better questions:
- What happened?
- What is my alarm trying to protect?
- Why does the past sometimes feel intensely present?
- What does this moment remind me of?
- How can my alarm learn that today is different from yesterday?
Understanding, however, is not the same as excusing harmful behavior. Compassion does not eliminate responsibility, and recognizing why a response developed does not mean it must continue governing your life. Understanding creates the space in which honest responsibility, meaningful repair, and lasting change can begin without self-rejection.
Before fear shaped your reactions, you were created with dignity, purpose, and the capacity for connection. Your experiences may have wounded that original design, but they did not create your worth-and they did not erase who you were created to be.
Through thoughtful teaching, relatable stories, practical reflection, and guided exercises, The Alarm Within will help you listen to your nervous system with greater curiosity, recognize the stories behind your protective patterns, and develop a wiser response to the present.
You are more than what happened to you.
You are more than the strategies you developed to survive.
You are more than your most difficult reaction.
You are not broken.
You make sense.

Brad R. Smedley is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Idaho and Washington and a certified EMDR therapist. His work has centered on trauma, attachment, identity, the nervous system, and the enduring human capacity for healing and connection. Before entering the counseling profession, Brad spent more than twenty years in education and school leadership. His experiences as an educator, therapist, pastorally engaged counselor, and fellow traveler through grief and restoration have shaped his compassionate approach to understanding human behavior. Rather than beginning with the question, "What is wrong with you?" he invites people to ask, "What happened, what did your alarm learn, and what is it trying to protect?"Brad is the developer of the Restorative Integration Framework, a way of seeing and attending to the whole person through the lenses of original design, attachment, the nervous system, identity, and relationship. His writing integrates clinical understanding, personal reflection, and Christian faith while respecting the questions and experiences each reader brings.Brad and his wife, Paula, live in North Idaho. They have three sons, three daughters-in-law, and eight grandchildren. He remains actively involved in his church community, where he supports individuals, couples, ministry leaders, and church staff.
