Frege’s puzzle concerning belief reports does not seem to be consistent with the thesis of semantic innocence according to which the semantic value of a proper name is nothing but its referent. This book aims at analyzing semantic values of proper names occurring in belief reports. By extending the notion of semantic pretense and introduction of pleonastic entities, Frege’s puzzle is analyzed without giving up semantic innocence.
