Teaching and Researching: Autonomy in Language Learning: Applied Linguistics in Action
Autor Phil Benson, Hayo Reindersen Limba Engleză Hardback – 30 apr 2027
The book moves beyond traditional views of autonomy as independent or self-directed learning. It presents autonomy as a dynamic process that develops through learners’ interactions with teachers, peers, technologies and the wider environments in which language learning takes place. It examines motivation, emotions, identity, agency and self-regulation, alongside learning in classrooms, self-access settings and the increasingly important worlds of informal, mobile and online learning. In the book, Reinders and Benson combine theory with practical approaches and research case studies, paying particular attention to how artificial intelligence is changing opportunities for learners to shape and manage their own learning. They ultimately offer a contemporary framework for understanding learner autonomy as a central capacity for language learning and lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world.
This book is essential reading for postgraduate students in applied linguistics and TESOL, advanced undergraduates, language teacher educators, and researchers. It is also valuable for teachers and curriculum designers.

Recenzii
"A much-awaited new edition completely revised to reflect the evolving theoretical, environmental and technological landscape of learner autonomy, including the expanding field of language learning psychology, the diversifying spaces where language learning happens, and the pervading impact of AI and digital technologies. An invaluable reference resource for autonomy scholars everywhere."
Ema Ushioda, University of Warwick
"Twenty-five years ago the first edition of this book brought much-needed clarity to a rapidly expanding field of research and practice in language education. This comprehensively revised third edition, authoritative and encyclopaedic in its coverage, remains an indispensable companion for established researchers and an essential starting point for newcomers."
Professor David Little, Fellow Emeritus, Trinity College Dublin
"This book presents a comprehensive and reconceptualized account of learner autonomy. The multidimensional nature of autonomy is explored from different perspectives, highlighting. the crucial role it plays in language learning and use and how it can be supported through classroom practice. I highly recommend it to researchers, teacher educators, and language teachers."
