Stories for Talking: A Programme to Support the Early Development of Language Through Storytime
Autor Rebecca Bergmannen Limba Engleză Paperback – 29 ian 2027
Fully updated, this inclusive and easy-to-implement programme supports the language skills of all children by focusing on three key levels of language development: vocabulary, sentences and narrative. It provides a highly structured set of activities for five popular story books, starting at an easy functional level for children who have few words and limited sentences, and progressing to activities that promote rich vocabulary and narrative skills for those with more advanced language. Language learning in group activities is further embedded through a whole setting, play-based approach which supports the development of role play and confidence using language in social situations. In-depth explanatory sections are included for those who want to further develop the ideas into their own planning.
This tried-and-tested, fun approach works at universal, targeted and specialist levels and is an effective preparation for storytelling and literacy, for all children, but it will be of particular value for children with SLCN, DLD, and EAL learners. It is an essential resource for early years practitioners, speech and language therapists, childminders, and parents/carers.

Recenzii
"As a Speech and Language Therapist, I have used the Stories for Talking approach since its early publication and have seen first-hand the significant impact it has had on the language development of children and young people with both developmental and acquired language difficulties. It remains my go to approach for universal language support, while also being highly effective for targeted work with individual children.
I have implemented Stories for Talking in settings across the North West, including mainstream and specialist provisions serving communities with some of the lowest levels of language in the country. In settings where other approaches had proved difficult to embed, Stories for Talking achieved such strong outcomes that it was subsequently rolled out across whole academy trusts.
The approach has been particularly successful for children with English as an Additional Language and, through collaborative work with families, has supported vocabulary development in both English and home languages. It has transformed Early Years practice in countless settings by providing a practical, sustainable framework for developing language-rich environments.
I am delighted to see this updated edition and excited that even more children, families and practitioners will benefit from Rebecca Bergmann's outstanding work." - Deeba Akram, Speech and Language Therapist, Stepping Stones SaLT Services Ltd
"Stories for Talking is a popular approach and is used widely in Hull within both PVI settings and schools. A major strength is that it is an inclusive approach that fits easily into the curriculum, providing targeted support for all children at every level of language through story, activities and play based learning. The Stories for Talking approach closely aligns with Ofsted’s focus on supporting children’s communication and language in the early years with an emphasis on books and building vocabulary. Practitioners love how easy it is to implement, aided by a very comprehensive and practical manual that includes planning. We get excellent feedback from the training course too. We receive feedback on how effective Stories for Talking is at supporting children’s progress, in both their receptive and expressive language. In schools, teachers communicate how well the approach dovetails with the Pie Corbett Talk for Writing framework. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Stories for Talking." - Carolyn Andrew, Early Years Standards and Improvement Officer, Hull City Council
"As a Local Authority we have commissioned the Stories for Talking training to be delivered to our Early Years Quality Team, School EYFS staff as well as Childminders and Private, Voluntary and Independent Early Years sector. Attendees expressed that using the Stories for Talking programme would fully support them with the teaching of early language through story time. They praised the clear structure of the programme and found the examples linked to popular stories very useful and could see how they would integrate them into their current practice . For those who had EAL learners at their settings, they stated how useful a support tool this would be, along with engaging parents with the process too. Attendees especially liked the links made to the learning environment and appreciated how this would impact upon children's progress during the teaching of the programme." - Vicky Carr, Early Years Quality, Access and Moderation Manager, Sheffield City Council.
"The Stories for Talking whole class approach is very simple to implement and does not require additional adults to take children out of class. It is particularly suitable for 3-5 year old children and is also used very successfully within 2 year old provision." - Dr Andrea Lancaster, EYFS Consultant
"We have been using Stories for Talking at Watercliffe Meadow Nursery since 2013 when our Nursery Lead attended training with Rebecca Bergmann. We have used Stories for Talking consistently over the years since then to support all children in nursery.
The majority of our children arrive at nursery with lower than expected levels of vocabulary, expressive language and language comprehension. Stories for Talking has helped our children to build up their communication skills quickly over a week due to the repetition of words, use of visual supports and modelling of language.
We have consistently found that children at all levels make significant progress across all areas of communication after following the Stories for Talking approach. They engage really well in the sessions and develop a love of stories, in addition to the language skills they gain." - Ian Read, (Headteacher) and Danielle Houghton (Early years teacher) Watercliffe Meadow Community Primary School, Sheffield.
