Spirituality: The Basics: The Basics

Autor Morgan Shipley
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 17 mar 2027
Spirituality: The Basics offers an accessible guide to the diverse expressions and practices of contemporary spirituality, moving beyond rigid definitions to explore how it functions across secular and nonreligious contexts as a vital resource for purpose, meaning, and belonging. Presenting spirituality not as a fixed essence but as a dynamic mode of engagement, the book examines how individuals cultivate selfhood, relate to others and the natural world, and pursue holistic well-being, while also grappling with complexities such as romanticization, commodification, and cultural appropriation. By tracing both historical roots and evolving meanings—particularly as traditional religious affiliation declines and spiritual expressions expand—the book encourages readers to consider not what spirituality is, but what it does: how it shapes lives, relationships, professions, and institutions in tangible ways, with enduring connections to compassion, ethical action, and social engagement. Topics and discussions include:
  • The nature and contours of spirituality
  • Distinctions and overlaps between spirituality, religion, and secularity
  • Spirituality and/as compassion
  • Spirituality, virtuous living, and social transformation
  • Spirituality and well-being
  • Neoliberal spirituality, commodification, and issues of appropriation
  • Spirituality in healthcare and systems of care
  • Spirituality, social work, and person-centered practice
  • Spirituality, mental health, and contemplative approaches
  • Spirituality and holistic education
  • Nature spirituality and environmental responsibility
  • Spirituality in digital life and artificial intelligence
Spirituality: The Basics serves as an ideal entry point for readers seeking to understand how spirituality functions across personal, relational, and professional domains. It will be especially valuable for undergraduate students, those who identify as “spiritual but not religious,” as well as anyone interested in the evolving role of spirituality in contemporary life.

Recenzii

'This timely and engaging book is a crucial intervention to an ongoing conversation about “spirituality” a term that is simultaneously ubiquitous and slippery.  Shipley invites readers to engage with spirituality as a concept and as a way of being in the world and American society, that may also speak to them where they are.  This is a book that would be of great value in undergraduate classrooms and beyond, and not just for those who identity as “spiritual but not religious” or as unaffiliated or as agnostic, though they would undoubtedly benefit from reading it.  In fact, this book would be of great value to anyone who views spirituality as a “mere” extension of religion or a pale facsimile of religiosity. Shipley builds on the significant historiographical work that has highlighted how a modern spiritual tradition arose, proving that its historical roots are deep and that its contemporary manifestations, while appearing inchoate, exist in a religious and cultural milieu.  What this book offers is the chance to see spirituality as its own entity, as one connected with religion, but not only religion.'
- Dr. Lydia Willsky-Ciollo, Professor of Religious Studies and Director of American Studies at Fairfield University
'Although there are numerous books about spirituality from a practitioner’s perspective, Shipley gifts us a scholarly text of spirituality’s utility in professional domains. Setting aside the negative characteristics often attributed to spirituality, Shipley showcases spirituality as a professional tool integrated to more holistically serve clients, students, and patients. This work is a must read for those wanting to know more about spirituality and the professions.'
- Dr. Terry Shoemaker, Associate Teaching Professor, School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Arizona State University
'This is an excellent introductory text for beginners who want to understand the study of spirituality. It is carefully researched and clearly explained, ideal for undergraduates or general readers.'
- Dr. Susannah Crockford, Lecturer, Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology, University of Exeter
