Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language
Autor Ilan Stavansen Limba Engleză Paperback – 2 aug 2004
But Spanish north of the Rio Grande has not spread in its pure Iberian form. On the contrary, a signature of the brewing "Latin Fever" that has swept the United States since the mid-1980s is the astonishing creative linguistic amalgam of tongues used by people of Hispanic descent, not only in major cities but in rural areas as well -- neither Spanish nor English, but a hybrid, known only as Spanglish.

Spanglish-a hybrid of Spanish and English-is intricately interwoven with the history and culture of Latinos, the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the United States. With deep roots that trace back to the U.S. annexation of Mexican territories in the early to mid-19th century, Spanglish can today be heard in as far-flung places as urban cities and rural communities, on playgrounds and in classrooms around the country. This volume features the most significant articles including peer-review essays, interviews, and reviews to bring together the best scholarship on the topic. Learn about the historical and cultural contexts of the slang as well as its permeation into the pop culture vernacular. Ten signed articles, essays, and interviews are included in the volume.

Fully indexed and concluding with a one-page bibliography; recommended for Latino, linguistic, and cultural studies collections.
In Spanglish, readers will hear critics say that Spanglish bastardizes Standard English and/or Spanish and delays the process of assimilation. The author, a supporter of Spanglish, sees the criticism as proof of how the American empire tries to take apart and destroy competing cultures rather than incorporating them. Stavans thinks that this hybrid form of communication adds dynamism, creativity, and political savvy.
