Social Learning in Sport: Leading Communities of Practice and Social Learning Spaces for Coach Development
Editat de Diane M. Culver, Don Vinson, Michel Milistetden Limba Engleză Paperback – 11 sep 2026
This new text examines the wide range of roles involved in social learning leadership and illustrates the practices and people who are working ‘behind the curtains’, often invisible to others. The book is divided into four sections. The introductory section provides social learning leaders with a brief overview of recent developments in the theory, including the value creation framework, and its use in sport. In sections two and three, the reader learns through engaging with the stories of practitioners from around the world who are inspired by a social learning approach with a principal focus on coach development. The concluding section includes examples of challenges drawn from practice and provides social learning leaders with recommendations for future directions.
Social Learning in Sport is invaluable for all social learning leaders, including sport coaches, administrators, coach developers, and academics.

Recenzii
“Social Learning in Sport arrives at exactly the right moment for our field, as a growing number of coaches, developers, and organisations are adopting social learning approaches to enhance practice. The authors revisit foundational ideas and thoughtfully expand on them to address the realities of contemporary practice, where collaboration, identity, and context intersect in increasingly complex ways. This is an important and timely contribution to the global conversation on learning, leadership, and practice in sport”.
Professor Christine Nash, PhD, Co-Chair, ICCE Research Committee, Professor of Sport Coaching, University of Edinburgh, UK
“I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in coach development. It brings together powerful stories of impact, offering a rich collection of social learning experiences that illuminate how coaches grow and influence others. Written with coach developers working “in the field” in mind, it shines a light on the real, day‑to‑day complexity of high‑performance sport and demonstrates how meaningful learning emerges from that messy reality.
The book underscores the vital role coach educators and developers play in creating environments where people can share wisdom, embrace diversity, and navigate uncertainty—ultimately generating lasting value for coaches, athletes, and all those working within the high‑performance landscape. In a time when helping coaches discover their voice and agency is more important than ever, this book provides both inspiration and practical insight”.
