Silent Collaborators: On Authorship in Architecture reconsiders the persistence of the single-author narrative in architecture by examining the wider networks of people, expertise, and circumstances through which architectural works are conceived, developed, represented, and remembered. Rather than replacing one canon with another, the book expands the notion of authorship, asking how particular contributions become visible, obscured, or forgotten, and what these processes reveal about the ways architectural history is constructed.
Through case studies ranging from Mies van der Rohe’s Chicago Convention Hall and Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh Capitol to Adler & Sullivan’s Auditorium Building, this collected edition travels from the modern masters to beyond, bringing less visible collaborators to the foreground.  Stories including those of the young architects who worked on Rome’s Quartiere Tiburtino, Latin American collaborators in Le Corbusier’s atelier, and expats in Australian New Town planning expand the narrative to include disadvantaged and disincentivized, while others elaborate the stories behind the often invisible roles of the structural engineer, media, architect wives, and even community design partnerships.  Together, the chapters reveal the many forms collaboration can take and the different circumstances — professional hierarchies, gender, migration, publicity, collective labor, and disciplinary boundaries — that shape whose contributions are acknowledged and whose remain in the background.
