She: The Collected Writings of H. Rider Haggard, cartea 4

Autor H. Rider Haggard
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 21 sep 2021
"Yea, all things live forever, though at times they sleep and are forgotten." Magic, madness, and murder-and the legend of an undying sorceress-queen who rules over the lost kingdom of Kôr: This is the scarcely believable family history to which Leo Vincey finds himself heir, when he inherits an ancient relic and accompanying letter from his late father. To find out the truth for himself, Leo and his companions set sail for the coast of Africa. There, they come face to face with Ayesha, She-who-must-be-obeyed, a figure veiled in mystery who has waited for centuries for the return of her lost lover.... Combining action, adventure, and romance, She has enchanted generations of readers, from Freud and Jung to C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, ever since the runaway success of its initial publication in 1887. About This Edition Based on the "New and Revised" text of 1896, this edition presents Haggard's final vision of his most popular work. Also included is the author's suggested prologue to a dramatized version of She, together with a poem on and review of the same by Andrew Lang, to whom the book is dedicated. The Collected Writings of H. Rider Haggard includes the definitive editions of all the author's fictional works as well as his autobiography, now printed as a uniform series in sixty volumes.

Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
'My empire is of the imagination.' These are the words of Ayesha, the mysterious white queen of a Central African tribe, whose dread title, 'She-who-must-be-obeyed', testifies to her undying beauty and magical powers; but they serve equally well to describe the hold of her author, Henry Rider Haggard, on generations of readers. Writing 'at white heat', and in the flush of success after the publication of King Solomon's Mines, Haggard drew again on his knowledge of Africa and of ancient legends, but also on something deeper and more disturbing. To the Englishmen who journey through shipwreck, fever, and cannibals to her hidden realm, 'She' is the goal of a quest bequeathed to them two thousand years before; to Haggard's readers, 'She' is the embodiment of one of the most potent and ambivalent figures of Western mythology, a female who is both monstrous and desirable - and, without question, deadlier than the male. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

First published in 1886-87, H. Rider Haggard's imperial romance follows its English heroes from the quiet rooms of Cambridge to the uncharted interior of Africa in search of a legendary lost city with an ageless white queen. The two men find their way to the ancient city of Kor, where the beautiful and mysterious Ayesha, "She-who-must-be-obeyed," rules. Despite her cruelty, both men become fascinated by Ayesha, who leads them on a harrowing journey to bathe in the underground "River of Life." A thrilling "history of adventure," She also reveals the complexity of Victorian attitudes towards race, gender, exploration, and empire.

This Broadview edition presents the novel in its original illustrated Graphic magazine version, never before republished, and includes a critical introduction and supporting materials that demonstrate the novel's relationship to late-Victorian issues such as imperialism, archaeology, race, evolution, and the rise of the "New Woman."
