Notăm cu interes structura narativă care îmbină poezia cu un ritm alert, aproape cinematografic. Autorul a ales să păstreze termenii în limba spaniolă neitalicizați, oferind cititorului o imersiune totală în atmosfera orașului Juarez. Din punct de vedere tematic, Saint Death se distanțează de lucrările sale anterioare, precum Floodland sau Midwinterblood, trecând de la peisaje distopice sau istorice la o critică socială contemporană extrem de actuală. Dacă în Revolver explorase supraviețuirea în sălbăticia Alaskăi, aici Sedgwick analizează supraviețuirea într-o „junglă” urbană dominată de narcos și de umbra divinității Santa Muerte. Este o lectură densă, provocatoare, care nu oferă soluții simple, ci invită la reflecție asupra impactului politicilor de frontieră asupra vieților individuale.

Marcus Sedgwick (1968–2022) a fost un autor britanic de o versatilitate rară, laureat al multor distincții literare, printre care se numără prestigiosul Michael L. Printz Award. I can't fully explain how important it is, how horrifically hopeful and sad it is. Just writing this review and remembering the book has me on the verge of tears. I can only hope you read it.
Beautifully written, the prose is absorbing, taut yet poetic, with a real sense of menace ... This is not a comfortable read, and not for the faint-hearted - Sedgwick points a finger at our indifference, and no compromise has been made to the brutal realism - but it is an important read.
