Reimagining First-Year Writing: The Intersection of Art, Design, and Inquiry
Autor Vittoria Sofia Rubino-DeLuciaen Limba Engleză Paperback – 25 feb 2027
Reimagining First-Year Writing responds to the needs of students learning in a world shaped by digital media, social change, mental health concerns, and global uncertainty, arguing that writing courses should help students connect academic work to lived experience and real-world questions. The book combines accessible theory with practical classroom guidance, including sample assignments, lesson ideas, critique models, and community-centered research activities. Its key contribution is a sustained framework for treating the writing classroom as a creative research studio where students experiment with materials, audiences, genres, and purposes. By bringing together studio habits such as risk-taking, iteration, collaboration, and reflection with design-based problem-solving, this book gives educators adaptable tools for building more engaged, equitable, and future-facing writing courses.
Written for college writing instructors, graduate students, writing program administrators, and educators interested in multimodal learning, student development, equitable pedagogies, community-based writing, and literacy studies in first-year writing programs.

Recenzii
“Hardly a week goes by now without yet another news report documenting the collapse of our students' attention spans, their plummeting reading and writing preparedness. Add to this the overnight seepage of AI into every corner of academia (with some studies claiming that as many as 90% of high school and college students now submit work partially or wholly generated by AI agents), and it seems faculty everywhere are pulling out their hair, at a loss for how to respond.
Educators have no choice but to meet this new paradigm shift by re-imagining their pedagogies and curricula. The progressive field of first-year writing--with its focus on student-centered learning, multimodal research, process portfolios, reflection-in-action, and, most recently, art-based research--has laid the groundwork for much of the new pedagogical exploration needed now. Vittoria Rubino-DeLucia advances this work by arguing for the first-year writing course as a studio workspace where composing is a process of hands-on engagement--a site of curious, playful, inventive, imaginative experimentation.
What's exciting about this exhaustively researched argument is that Rubino-DeLucia's vision is relevant for far more than the FYW classroom. Faculty teaching high school college preparedness workshops, first-year experience courses, all manner of independent and directed self-studies in virtually all disciplines, exploratory advanced seminars, and certainly all art curricula will benefit from this overview. Faculty and graduate students in Education, as well as creative writing and studio art MFA programs, will find much in this volume to give them the necessary support for redesigning learning environments that imaginatively respond to the new challenges.”

“As the arts play an increasingly prominent role in first-year composition, Reimagining First-Year Writing is the only compendium to date that theorizes these practices as part of a transdisciplinary studio structured by design thinking, where curiosity, persistence, iterative problem-solving, improvisation, human connection, and material engagement shape how students learn. Rubino- DeLucia brings readers into the scholarship on art and design in writing studies while offering instructors practical activities and assignments fit for a variety of course outcomes. Her vision is especially urgent in the age of generative AI. By foregrounding the embodied, material, and relational dimensions of composing, Rubino-DeLucia responds to the challenges of AI in a way that centers humanity, inquiry, creativity, and belonging.”
