A long-overdue critical and creative reappraisal of the Umbra Poets Workshop

The Umbra Galaxy is a landmark two-volume project illuminating the radical creativity and enduring legacy of the Umbra Poets' Workshop, a groundbreaking collective of Black writers formed in early 1960s New York City. Emerging at a nexus of political resistance, aesthetic experimentation, and cultural transformation, Umbra fostered a vibrant community where poetry, performance, and activism converged. This project--the first of its kind--offers a comprehensive resource for scholars, artists, and readers committed to Black literary and political traditions. Volume I: Reading Umbra gathers critical and creative responses from leading poets and scholars, tracing Umbra's influence from the Black Arts Movement to contemporary poetics and cultural resistance. Volume II: The Umbra Reader returns vital archival materials to print--poetry, prose, and manifestos by Umbra members, many previously unpublished--revealing the group's breadth, experimental power, and global reach. Together, these volumes reframe Umbra not only as a catalyst for Black aesthetic innovation but as a key node in the wider history of American avant-garde and liberation movements. The Umbra Galaxy restores a collective voice that helped reshape literature, community, and cultural politics--and whose momentum continues to animate Black art today.
