This story provides a portrait of violence visited upon a family by an avenging spirit (ngozi). 17 year-old, Mandirasa, a rural girl, is forced by her uncles to marry an old man as appeasement to an aggrieved spirit. The story chronicles her escape to South Africa, how she falls in love with a Congolese guy who was also fleeing from the war in his country, DRC. As they are enjoying love and safety in Mzansi, xenophobic attacks break out and their safe haven is disrupted. The attacks leave the two separated. The story chronicles their search for each other and their reunion. Mandirasa returns to Zimbabwe and fights her uncles in court. Will she win this battle?
