Quantum Solid State Magnetism: Oxford Graduate Texts

Quantum magnetism is one of the thriving branches of condensed matter physics, and it has been so for a few decades. Magnetism of materials is important not only for practical applications, but because certain magnetic compounds host exotic fundamental physics that can be studied experimentally. Materials magnetism is an entirely quantum phenomenon and emerges from the collective behaviour of electrons in the solid, rather than from their individual properties as elementary particles. This textbook offers a concise overview of the most important concepts in quantum magnetism, while also positioning the subject within the broader science of magnetism. Fortunately, magnetism is one of those areas of physics where insightful experimental data can be obtained by multiple techniques and quantitatively compared to theory. The book opens with a systematic discussion of linear response theory in the context of magnetic matter. Everything else, such as the magnetism of the electron gas, of individual ions, and of strongly interacting systems, is viewed through the lens of linear response. This approach allows us to move from simple to more complex, quantum systems, while remaining within the same framework. All the derivations are rigorous but explained in accessible terms.Advanced students in theory and experiment will gain a thorough understanding of the theoretical foundation of magnetism, coupled with numerous modern and classic experimental examples.

Recenzii

Has the potential to become a seminal text in the field, addressing a clear need for a resource that is both comprehensive and accessible.
An excellent book, and a good moment to have a comprehensive book on quantum magnetism.
What makes this book unique are that it is meant to be accessible to experimentalists while maintaining sufficient rigor to satisfy theorists, and that it uses response-function formalism throughout.

Notă biografică

Kirill Povarov is a researcher at the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory, part of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 2010. He began his work in magnetism as an electron-spin-resonance spectroscopist in the Spin Dynamics Group at the Kapitza Institute for Physical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Prof.?A.?Smirnov. After completing his PhD there, he moved to ETH Zürich in 2013 to continue his research on quantum magnetism in Andrey Zheludev's group. There, he also became acquainted with neutron-based spectroscopic techniques. Since 2022, his work at HZDR has focused on ESR and ultrasound spectroscopy of magnetic quantum matter, including studies in extreme magnetic fields.Andrey Zheludev is a professor at the Laboratory for Solid State Physics, ETH Zürich, since 2009. He graduated from MIPT and the Kapitza Institute in Moscow in 1991. He obtained his PhD at CEA Grenoble, France, under Dr. Jacques Schweizer, on polarized neutron diffraction of organic magnets. In 1994, he moved to BNL for inelastic neutron scattering with Dr. Gen Shirane. There he started his own program on quantum spin systems, which he continued at ORNL from 2000. His research group covers all aspects of quantum magnetism: synthesis, in-house magnetic and thermodynamic measurements, large-facility experiments (neutrons, muons, synchrotron radiation), and numerical modelling and theory.
