Ritmul este alert, febril, aproape sufocant. Găsim în această carte o cursă contra cronometru care nu lasă timp de respirație nici protagonistei, nici cititorului. Detectivul Sam Shephard se întoarce la muncă după concediul de maternitate, dar nu are parte de o tranziție ușoară. Este aruncată direct în mijlocul unui caz rece: uciderea unui preot anglican din Dunedin. Suntem de părere că tensiunea este construită magistral prin contrastul dintre imaginea imaculată a victimei și violența crimei. Cine a citit Expectant va recunoaște aici aceeași vulnerabilitate a eroinei aflată la granița dintre viața personală și datoria profesională, însă Prey se distinge printr-o miză mult mai întunecată. Dacă în volumul anterior pericolul viza viitorul, aici trecutul este cel care revine să bântuie prezentul cu o forță distrugătoare. Putem afirma că Vanda Symon atinge maturitatea stilistică în acest al șaselea volum al seriei Sam Shephard. Spre deosebire de atmosfera din Faceless, unde exploram un thriller de sine stătător, aici autoarea folosește contextul procedural pentru a diseca secretele unei comunități religioase aparent perfecte. Dunedin devine un personaj în sine, un decor rece unde păcatele vechi refuză să rămână îngropate. Când un nou martor este eliminat brutal, presiunea ierarhiei polițienești devine insuportabilă. Este o lectură intensă, unde ireverența lui Sam față de autoritate este singura armă împotriva unei conspirații a tăcerii.
