H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) was an American journalist, essayist, and cultural critic known for his incisive prose and formidable skepticism. Writing primarily for The Baltimore Sun and as co-founder of The American Mercury, Mencken became one of the most influential public intellectuals of the early twentieth century.Renowned for his wit, satirical edge, and sharp criticism of politics, religion, and social convention, Mencken styled himself as a defender of individual liberty and rational inquiry.
