Peter Schlemihl

Autor Adelbert Von Chamisso
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 18 aug 2026
A shadow is sold in a moment of desperation, and the world is never the same again. In the flickering candlelight of early nineteenth-century Europe, a man's fateful bargain with a mysterious stranger sets the stage for one of the most haunting supernatural tales of the German Romantic era. This philosophical novella draws its readers into a realm where reality and illusion blur, and the price of one's soul is measured not in gold, but in the intangible currency of identity and belonging. Set against the backdrop of a society entranced by folklore and the uncanny, the story unfolds with quiet intensity, exploring the depths of human desire and the consequences of a faustian bargain. The protagonist's struggle is not merely with external forces, but with the moral dilemmas that arise when confronted by the seductive promise of wealth and the chilling isolation that follows. Each page is suffused with the atmosphere of classic German literature, its prose at once lyrical and precise, capturing the spirit of early 1800s fiction while inviting reflection on the enduring questions of selfhood and integrity. For lovers of nineteenth-century German novels and European literary classics, this work stands as a singular achievement-both a gripping supernatural fiction and a meditation on the boundaries between the seen and unseen. The narrative's roots in German folklore fiction lend it an air of timelessness, while its nuanced exploration of the human condition ensures its resonance across generations. Collectors and classic-library enthusiasts will appreciate its place among the great works of moral dilemma novels, where every choice echoes with philosophical weight. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Whether approached as a romantic era novel, a profound philosophical fable, or a touchstone of supernatural fiction, this restored volume invites readers to experience a story that continues to fascinate and unsettle, as relevant to the imagination now as it was two centuries ago.

Unsuccessful in his endeavours, the young and naive Peter Schlemihl seals a pact with the Devil in which he exchanges his shadow for the purse of Fortunatus, thereby gaining everlasting riches. But when he is ridiculed, persecuted and hated for being different from other men, he realizes that poverty is easier to bear than the loss of his peace of mind.

Originally written as a cautionary tale for the children of Chamisso's patron, Peter Schlemihl was hailed by contemporaries as a masterpiece with a wide adult appeal, and continues to capture imaginations today.
