Notă biografică
Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828-1906) was a Norwegian playwright and poet whose work helped transform nineteenth-century theatre and establish the foundations of modern drama. Often regarded as one of the most important dramatists after Shakespeare, Ibsen brought a new seriousness, realism, and moral pressure to the stage, replacing conventional theatrical effects with conflicts rooted in family life, social reputation, public hypocrisy, and the individual conscience. His major plays include A Doll's House, Ghosts, Hedda Gabler, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, The Master Builder, and An Enemy of the People. Across these works, Ibsen examined the structures of respectability that govern private and public life, making him a central figure in European literature, Scandinavian literature, political drama, realist theatre, and the modern stage. An Enemy of the People, first published in 1882, remains among his most widely read and performed plays, notable for its enduring treatment of truth, civic cowardice, public health, and the perilous position of the dissenter.
