Optical Fiber Sensor Technology: Applications and Systems: Optoelectronics, Imaging and Sensing, cartea 3

Editat de L.S. Grattan, B.T. Meggitt
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 7 dec 2010
Systems and Applications in Optical Fiber Sensor Technology The essential technology which underpins developments in optical fiber sensors continues to expand, and continues to be driven to a very large extent by advances in optoelectronics which have been produced for the ever-expanding optical com munications systems and networks of the world. The steps forward in the technol ogy, often accompanied by a reduction in the price of associated components, have been, and continue to be, adapted for use in a wide variety of optical fiber sensor systems. These include, for example, the use of photoinduced gratings as fiber sensor components, coupled with the wider availability of shorter wavelength lasers, bright luminescent sources and high-sensitivity detectors which have opened up new possibilities for both novel fiber optic sensor applications and new sensing systems. This is to be welcomed at a time when, coupled with integrated optic miniaturized devices and detectors, real possibilities of systems integration, at lower cost and increased utility, can be offered. The fiber laser, and the expansions of the types and availability of the doped fiber on which it is based, offer further examples of the integration of the essential components of advanced optical sensor systems, fitted for a new range of applications.

Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Sensor Technology The field of optical fiber sensors continues to expand and develop, being increasingly influenced by new applications of the technologies that have been the topics of research for some years. In this way, the subject continues to mature and reach into new areas of engineering. This text in the series on Optical Fiber Sensor Technology provides a foundation for a better understanding of those developments in the basic science and its applications in fiber sensors, underpinning the subject today. This book builds upon the work in an earlier single volume which covered a broad area of the subject, but which now, in this, volume 1 of the series, focuses upon the fundamentals and essentials of the technology. Material which is included has been carefully reviewed and in most cases thoroughly revised and expanded to reflect the current state of the subject, and provide an essential background for the more applications-oriented content of the subsequent volumes of the series. This volume opens with a status paper on optical fiber sensor technology, by Kenneth Grattan and Tong Sun providing in it a flavor of the main topics in the field and giving an essential overview at the sort of systems which are discussed in more detail in the other chapters in the whole series. An extensive publication list of readily accessible papers reflecting these topics is included.

Recenzii

` ... I feel that the editors and authors are to be congratulated for successfully accomplishing their goal of compressing the quite diverse field of optical fibre sensor technology into a single, easy-to-read and well illustrated volume aimed at the non-specialist.'
International Journal of Optoelectronics
` ... However, the editors have additionally provided a refreshing angle with this book, by paying particular attention to the enabling technology incorporated into fibre sensors ... The subject matter is very practical and the treatment given in this book is a very thorough and comprehensive one. The book does present many state-of-the-art ideas, but not at the expense of detailed descriptions of enabling background technology. The presentation is excellent throughout with an extensive list of references grouped at the end of each chapter and a good overall subject index. The text is to be highly recommended to both designers, engineers and students alike.'
