This is an unusual approach to a collection of poems and one that will make the book very popular with teachers.
All have interesting themes and many are funny. Stevens stresses in his tips sections that, above all, to be motivated to learn the poems and to put them across, the children need to like and understand what they are reading. There should be no difficulty with that.
"If you don't like a poem," says Roger Stevens in a useful section for teachers and parents at the back of this book "why would you want to remember it?" This book is a very good start for any teacher unsure of how to implement Government advice about learning poems by heart.
The poetry collection, with its...careful selection of appropriate poems, should appeal to child readers...a useful addition to primary school library shelves.
