Night Rules: Ten Big Ideas for Governing Nightlife in the 24-Hour City
Autor Lutz Leichsenringen Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 dec 2026
Written by Lutz Leichsenring, co-founder of VibeLab and the Nighttime Foundation and a fifteen-year veteran of the Clubcommission Berlin, Night Rules draws on two decades of advocacy, research, and frontline experience across more than sixty countries.
The book traces the story from the dancefloors of 1970s New York through the fall of the Berlin Wall, the rise of the Night Mayor movement, and the global pandemic that silenced the night overnight. It examines displacement and gentrification, corporate consolidation of live music, the algorithmic enclosure of cultural life, and the generational shift reshaping who goes out and what they find when they get there. It documents what cities from Amsterdam to Nairobi, from Chengdu to Medellín have learned about governing nightlife as civic infrastructure, and what happens when they fail to.
At its core, the book argues that the night is a legitimate domain of urban governance, as consequential as transport, housing, or public health. It is where loneliness is reduced, where polarisation is interrupted by proximity, and where communities form across every difference the daytime insists on maintaining. Grounded in interviews with Night Mayors, politicians, DJs, club operators, urban planners, and cultural advocates, the book is both an analysis of what the night produces and a demand that cities start governing it as if it matters. The book culminates in ten actionable ideas for transforming how cities govern the night. Written for urban policymakers, municipal officials, cultural planners, and nightlife advocates, this book offers both a passionate defense and a practical roadmap for protecting the spaces that come alive after dark.

Recenzii
"Here, at last, is the overview both ‘we’ and the night have been waiting for: a bold, wide-angle view of why nightlife matters far beyond entertainment. Lutz sees the night as a whole: as culture, potential, economy, infrastructure, conflict zone, civic stage and fragile commons."
Charles Landry, international urbanist and author
"Lutz has done an exceptional job at capturing the essence of the night with his words, while highlighting the core reasons of why nightlife matters. It’s about why the culture and the people behind it matter, why human connection matters now, more than ever, and why it’s all worth fighting for. Warning: This book will make you want to go dancing all night."
Kae Burke, co-founder of House of Yes, New York City
"I met Lutz many years ago in Berlin, when he stood on the staircase of a small club as spokesperson for the Clubcommission, fighting for its rights against strict regulatory demands. Over the years we kept crossing paths at conferences large and small, somewhere on this planet. Lutz explained the connections and interdependencies to curious audiences. He presented numbers, precise data, his own research findings, always as an advocate for a vibrant nighttime culture, particularly on the economic potential of a growing club landscape and the revenue effects for any municipality that says 'yes.' His book will reveal some of the insights behind this research. It will bring readers closer to this vital subject, and especially to the benefits of a refreshing, sustainable approach to urban development."
Dimitri Hegemann, co-founder of Tresor, Berlin
"A decade ago, the night-time economy was a niche conversation happening in a handful of cities. Lutz Leichsenring understood that this was not just about nightclubs and late licences–it was about urban identity, and the right to the city after dark. His pioneering work transformed a fringe idea into mainstream policy. Today, 97% of cities in the World Cities Culture Forum network are actively working on the night-time economy. That shift does not happen without the movement Lutz helped build."
Laia Gasch, CEO, World Cities Culture Forum, London
"I was thrilled to receive Night Rules and to read how beautifully and meticulously Lutz has documented and encapsulated the culture from his personal and professional perspective. The scope of this book is vast and impressive. It evaluates a thirty year career with a lightness of touch and gravitas of research, taking the deepest dive into this long overlooked, culturally significant movement. He reveals, recounts, investigates and celebrates the history, the successes, complexities and contradictions of what has grown from a counter-cultural response into a thriving industry that now contributes billions to the global economy. It is a magnificent read and I am honoured to be cited in these pages."
DJ Paulette, DJ, Author, Manchester
"Lutz is a dedicated leader in nighttime governance who I looked to when building the Office of Nightlife in New York, and I recognize him as one of the true pioneers of this global movement. Drawing on decades of experience and relationships across the international nighttime economy, he offers a thoughtful examination of how cities govern after dark. Night Rules is both an important historical record and an essential guide for policymakers, advocates, and industry leaders working to build vibrant, inclusive, and well-governed cities."
