Herman Melville's classic tale of Ishmael, Captain Ahab, and the White Whale comes to life through stark drawings in this graphic novel adaptation. Ishmael, a young merchant marine, decides to embark with his friend Queequeg on a voyage on the whaling ship the "Pequod," helmed by Captain Ahab. They soon discover that the strange captain's true mission is to find and kill Moby Dick, a great white whale who tore off Ahab's leg. Ahab's quest for revenge, a quintessential case of man against nature and good against evil, remains an enduring story that has captivated readers for generations. In this edition, Denis Deprez's haunting graphics set a dark, menacing tone for the narrative.

Firru . a dat nota:

I loved this book beyond measure. I found it beautiful, lyrical, and never got stuck anywhere. The insurmountable obstacle--the chapter on the whaling paraphernalia--now seemed fascinating, and whether or not it was fascinating, I knew i'd get through it. The beauty of audio is its relentless forward drive. I had also had trouble with a book (one of a million, I know) without women in it... but found myself identifying with both Ishmael and Queequeg. And the audio just accentuated the poetry of this writing. It was years ago, and I still can remember how rapt I was--frequently arriving home only to sit in the garage to catch the end of a chapter.

Notă biografică

Herman Melville (1819 - 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet of the American Renaissance period. His best known works include Typee (1846), a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesian life and his whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851). His work was almost forgotten during his last thirty years. His writing draws on his experience at sea as a common sailor, exploration of literature and philosophy and engagement in the contradictions of American society in a period of rapid change. He developed a complex, baroque style: the vocabulary is rich and original, a strong sense of rhythm infuses the elaborate sentences, the imagery is often mystical or ironic and the abundance of allusion extends to Scripture, myth, philosophy, literature and the visual arts.

With an Introduction and Notes by David Herd, Lecturer in English and American Literature at the University of Kent at Canterbury and co-editor of 'Poetry Review'. Moby Dick is the story of Captain Ahab's quest to avenge the whale that 'reaped' his leg. The quest is an obsession and the novel is a diabolical study of how a man becomes a fanatic.

But it is also a hymn to democracy. Bent as the crew is on Ahab's appalling crusade, it is equally the image of a co-operative community at work: all hands dependent on all hands, each individual responsible for the security of each. Among the crew is Ishmael, the novel's narrator, ordinary sailor, and extraordinary reader.

Digressive, allusive, vulgar, transcendent, the story Ishmael tells is above all an education:in the practice of whaling, in the art of writing. Expanding to equal his 'mighty theme' - not only the whale but all things sublime - Melville breathes in the world's great literature. Moby Dick is the greatest novel ever written by an American.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

“Call me Ishmael.”
Thus begins one of the most famous journeys in literature—the voyage of the whaling ship Pequod and its embattled, monomaniacal Captain Ahab. Ishmael quickly learns that the Pequod’s captain sails for revenge against the elusive Moby Dick, a sperm whale with a snow-white hump and mottled skin that destroyed Ahab’s former vessel and left him crippled. As the Pequod sails deeper through the nights and into the sea, the divisions between man and nature begin to blur—so do the lines between good and evil, as the fates of the ship’s crewmen become increasingly unclear....
Melville’s classic tale of obsession and the sea, one of the most important and enduring masterworks of nineteenth-century literature, Moby Dick is a riveting drama, exploring rage, hope, destiny, and the deepest questions of moral truth.
