Bruce is hired by a prostitute to represent her son who is charged with an armed robbery. Although he has an extensive history of similar offenses and has been positively identified, Bruce is convinced that the victim is mistaken about her identification. During the trial, Bruce confronts the dynamics of the African-American community and has to evade the determined efforts of his client's mother to trade her services for his fee.
