Mind Leap: How to Think, Feel, and Flourish in the Age of AI

Autor Don Kilburg
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 7 dec 2026
Mind Leap: How to Think, Feel, and Flourish in the Age of AI explains the neuroscience behind what AI is doing to the mind and offers practical strategies for preserving human cognition, both individually and collectively, within a world transformed by Artificial Intelligence.
Across billions of daily repetitions, AI is driving largescale and unregulated change to how people use their brains, physically altering the neural pathways and impairing capacities such as independent thought, attention, judgement, creativity, and self-regulation. Kilburg demystifies the psychology behind these findings with clear descriptions of cognitive offloading, skill atrophy, neuroplasticity, and emotional development for a thorough understanding of how and why we risk losing the parts of ourselves we outsource to chatbots and algorithms. However, if we engage with intelligent systems consciously, not compulsively, Mind Leap argues that it is possible to enjoy the advantages of an AI-integrated world while protecting the mind on a personal scale, a societal scale, and for future generations. Chapters explore science-backed and actionable solutions for rewiring our brains and creating healthy partnership with AI.
With clear recommendations for individuals, institutions, and teaching children about AI, this book is a necessary resource for policymakers, educators, parents/guardians and concerned citizens who want to make sense of the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and the human mind.

Recenzii

“Sovereignty is, in the end, a function of judgment. States that cannot reason clearly about the world cannot defend their interests in it — and states whose citizens cannot reason clearly will no longer remain free. Mind Leap addresses the cognitive substrate beneath both. Don Kilburg examines what AI is doing to attention, discernment, and independent thought — and what individuals and institutions must do to protect them. One of the most strategically important books on AI I have read.”
Bjorn Beam, Former CIA Officer & Geopolitical Risk Advisor

"Responsible AI is often discussed as if it were mainly a technical problem. It is not. It is also an AI-Human interaction problem, one about what AI does to the human judgment of the people who use it. Mind Leap is the first book I have read that takes this dimension as seriously as it deserves. Don Kilburg gives everyday people and policymakers a clear, working method for protecting the cognitive capacities responsible AI ultimately depends on. Mind Leap is the book on AI and the mind that every practitioner responsible for deploying these systems should read."
Gio Altamirano Rayo, J.D., Ph.D, Adjunct Professor, Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University, and Responsible AI practitioner

“What I appreciate most is the perspective Don brings as both scientist and practitioner. He moves easily between research and real life, between individual psychology and collective responsibility. He reminds us that human mental capabilities are not a static trait but an evolving relationship between brain, behavior, and environment. That understanding — shared by modern neuroscience — makes this book much more than commentary on technology. It is a guide to conscious evolution in an age of accelerating change.”
Marie T. Banich, Ph.D., Neuroscientist

“I build the AI infrastructure and products that thousands of firms depend on every day. The technology side I understand. What I’m always trying to explore is the human side: what AI systems are doing to attention, judgment, and the way we think. Mind Leap is the first book on AI and the mind I've read that gets both sides right. Dr. Kilburg explains what AI is actually doing to the mind and gives you a practical method for staying clear-headed in a world increasingly designed to do your thinking for you. This is the book I want my colleagues, and the policymakers shaping this space reading.”
Alex Tsankov, Senior AI Engineer & Public Policy Practitioner

“Artificial intelligence will change how we think. Whether it also changes who we become depends on how we choose to engage it. In Mind Leap, Don Kilburg offers a thoughtful and psychologically insightful framework for navigating this new frontier with intention, discernment, and humanity. I'll be recommending Mind Leap widely.”
Cindy Mancini, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist

“Books on artificial intelligence rarely take consciousness seriously as a philosophical problem. Most treat the mind as if it were simply a faster or slower version of the systems we are now building. Don Kilburg engages the question of mind with the seriousness it deserves, and does so without losing the practical orientation that makes the book useful. Mind Leap is the rare book on AI and the mind that a philosopher of mind can recommend whole heartedly.”
Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes, Ph.D., philosopher of mind, university professor

“Readers of Mind Leap will walk away more resilient — better equipped to protect their attention, mood, and judgment under the sustained pressure of an AI-integrated world. Don Kilburg gives them a scientifically grounded vocabulary for what AI is doing to the mind and a working set of practices for staying coherent under it. Kilburg's unique life experience gives a unique well-rounded and balanced viewpoint on how our lives are impacted by these emerging technologies.“
Nicholas Morris, M.D., Psychiatrist

“The greatest challenge of AI may not be technological—it may be developmental. In Mind Leap, Don Kilburg explores how intelligent systems are shaping the very capacities that make us human: our ability to focus, regulate ourselves, imagine, connect, and create meaning. Thoughtful, timely, and grounded in psychological science, this book offers a compelling vision for how we can partner with AI without losing what matters most about being human."
Brian Razzino, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
