Migration and Alienation: The Many Faces of Psychosis: The International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis Book Series
Editat de Jos de Kroon, Ludi Van Bouwel, Lut De Rijdt, Alfred Gillhamen Limba Engleză Hardback – 7 feb 2027
Until recently, the psychotic patient has been seen as an outsider, a “stranger”, and this book provides distinct attention to the central theme of the stranger in our society in relation to the stranger in ourselves. Offering compassion, insight, new perspectives and striking testimonials of lived experience, it proposes that this “strangeness” is not only a condition we project onto others, but is also an intrinsic part of ourselves: a necessary encounter with the unfamiliar within that holds the potential to transform. The narratives featured in this book show that psychosis is not simply a set of symptoms but can also be a way of responding to overwhelming conditions, an attempt to make sense of the world. Migration, in both the physical and existential sense, can be a source of both disorientation and creativity.
Essential reading for mental health professionals, service users, family members and anyone interested in the interplay of culture, identity and psychological wellbeing, Migration and Alienation invites readers to rethink how we understand and support those who navigate both inner and outer worlds of change.

Recenzii
“An insightful exploration, “Migration and Alienation” illuminates the importance of context in understanding the complexities of the human mind. By skillfully analyzing migration’s profound impact on one’s psyche, this book masterfully demonstrates that psychosis reflects universal anxieties and concerns. A must-read for unraveling the dynamic interplay between environment and self, fostering resilience, and promoting compassionate understanding.”
Jim van Os, Professor Psychiatry University Utrecht and member of the ISPS.
“ISPS, through its remarkable book series, recognises that psychosis can come from multiple roots and routes. This new volume focusses on the fact that, for some, migration can lead to troubling estrangement and intriguingly links this in with the estrangement that can come from other developmental sources. I strongly recommend it to all interested in mental health.”
Brian Martindale, past-President, ISPS and Honorary President of the EFPP.
