NOTE: "Man & Horse" had a featured cameo in the movie, "Barbie", with Ryan Gosling. A remarkable Journey of friendship and endurance in a a captivating memoir by John Egenes, recounting his 1974 journey across the U.S. with his beloved quarter horse, Gizmo. Part adventure, part reflection, the story captures the deep bond between man and animal as they travel through deserts, plains, and mountains. With humor, honesty, and heart, Egenes invites readers into a bygone world of slow travel and quiet discovery across an America that no longer exists. Man & Horse is a rare kind of memoir: authentic, reflective, and quietly profound. It reminds us that sometimes the most powerful journeys are the ones taken slowly, with good company and no guarantees. The American landscape, both physical and cultural, is rendered in vivid detail, from forgotten backroads to the surprising kindness of strangers. Yet it's the relationship between man and horse that gives the book its soul. Gizmo emerges as a full character - smart, strong-willed, and endearing - and their growing bond is honest and deeply moving. A beautifully written, unforgettable story of grit, grace, and the healing power of companionship.
