John Scottus Eriugena: Great Medieval Thinkers

Autor Dierdre Carabine
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 9 mar 2000
This volume provides a brief and accessible introduction to the 9th-century philosopher and theologian John Scottus Eriugena, who was perhaps the most important philosophical thinker to appear in Latin Christendom in the period between Augustine and Anselm. Eriugena was known as the interpreter of Greek thought to the Latin West, particularly as teacher to Frankish emperor Charles the Bald, and this book emphasizes the relation of Eriugena's thought to his Greek and Latin sources, while also looking at his speculative philosophy.

Recenzii

What may particularly distinguish this introduction from others is the attention it gives to points of contemporary relevance in Eriugena's thought.
[Carabine's] work shines in its faithful highlighting of the, as it were, upside-down metaphysical perspective of this Irish thinker.
Carabine very helpfully conveys the general features of Eriugenian metaphysics in this introduction to his life and thought.
Each chapter is replete with superlative notes, reflecting Carabine's intimate familiarity with the corpus of Eriugenian scholarship and her keen interest in putting the beginner on the trail of resources helpful for further exploration of the various concerns she addresses directly (or alludes to) in her overview.
