Married to Anna Petrovna, an ill disinherited "jewess," his estate is managed by a distant relative. Unable to pay for his wife's treatment, he is criticized as heartless, then goes off to visit friends who he owes a great deal of money. Their daughter kisses Nikolai just as his wife arrives, and in a heated confrontation, he reveals to her that she is dying. Eventually, he is accused of courting the daughter for her inheritance and chaos ensues.
