Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning

Autor Anthony J. Liddicoat, Angela Scarino
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 dec 2026
The foundational text on intercultural language education, fully revised
Language education that treats culture as separable from language fails to develop learners as intercultural speakers and mediators. Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning, now in its second edition, provides a theoretically grounded and research-based framing of language learning that integrates intercultural communication, applied linguistics, language learning theories, and language pedagogy into a coherent orientation to curriculum design, teaching and learning practice, assessment, and evaluation across diverse language programs in diverse educational contexts internationally.
This edition features expanded conceptualisations of language, culture, and learning, including critical approaches to interculturality and language mediation. Revised material incorporates interdisciplinary theories of learning and hermeneutic approaches to language learning and assessment, recognizing language learning as both a multilingual and intercultural endeavour. A new chapter on teacher education foregrounds praxis in professional learning and development. Additional examples drawn from real classroom experiences appear throughout, and the elaboration of assessment reflects current research on multilingual and intercultural meaning-making.
Readers will also find:
  • A principled approach to assessing intercultural language learning that moves beyond traditional communicative testing towards foregrounding interpretation and reflection
  • Consistent integration of multilinguality and interculturality throughout the theoretical and pedagogical framing presented in every chapter
  • An expanded and integrated conception of curriculum development with adaptable principles for diverse language programs and institutional settings
  • Theoretical grounding that reframes the goals of language education towards personal meaning negotiation across diverse cultural contexts
  • A set of principles enabling teachers and curriculum designers to enact a multilingual and intercultural orientation directly in their classroom contexts
Widely recognized as a foundational text in the field, Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning serves graduate students, language teachers, teacher educators, researchers, curriculum designers, and policy makers working in applied linguistics, TESOL, and foreign language education who seek a comprehensive systematic and developmental framing of intercultural language education.
