Recenzii
'The fifth edition of Cooper's classic book offers a comprehensive and refreshingly nuanced perspective on individual differences research. It will be an essential read for students and teachers of the psychology at universities around the world. And given the ubiquity of individual differences, a copy should be on everybody else's bookshelf too.'
Professor Sophie von Stumm, Department of Education, University of York.
'The 5th edition of Dr. Colin Cooper's complete, comprehensive and most readable book continues the legacy of the previous editions with a contemporary and in-depth critical analysis of the theoretical foundations, measurement and applications as well as forward looking description of current advances on individual differences. The chapters on the the broad domains of intelligence and personality are fully researched and presented to make this a fascinating and engaging book, most certainly for psychology students but also for the more seasoned researcher, teacher, and practitioner.'
Professor Don Saklofske, University of Western Ontario and University of Calgary, Canada.
'This is an outstanding and engaging introduction to individual differences that students will find both accessible and intellectually stimulating. It brings together classic ideas and contemporary perspectives while consistently connecting theory to real-world applications with plenty of interactive examples. I would highly recommend this book to any advanced undergraduate course — it’s a resource that students will genuinely learn from and enjoy.'
Professor Jakob Pietschnig, University of Vienna, Austria.
'This is an outstanding and deeply impressive contribution to the field of individual differences by Colin Cooper who has a lifetime of dedicated research in this area. What makes this book truly exceptional is the way it combines conceptual clarity, methodological rigour, and critical evaluation into a coherent and highly engaging whole. It is rare to find a text that not only explains what we know about personality and cognitive abilities, but also consistently asks how we know it and whether we should trust it. The treatment of core topics such as measurement, factor analysis, and reliability and validity is particularly strong and really plays again to Cooper’s expertise, providing readers with the essential tools needed to think like critical scientists rather than passive consumers of research.
The book’s emphasis on distinguishing theoretical constructs from their operational definitions is both timely and vital, reinforcing the idea that psychological science rests on careful measurement and critical scrutiny . Equally impressive is the breadth of coverage. From broad trait theories to narrow and socially significant traits, from intelligence structure to the biological and cognitive processes underlying ability, and from emotional intelligence to genetic and environmental influences, the text offers a comprehensive and intellectually integrated account of the field. The chapters on ability processes and emotional intelligence are particularly noteworthy for their willingness to engage critically with popular theories, separating well-supported conclusions from claims that are less robust .
Perhaps most striking, however, is the consistent emphasis on scientific thinking. Throughout, the reader is encouraged to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and consider alternative explanations. This commitment to critical analysis, whether in discussing controversial topics such as the dark side of personality or the heritability of intelligence, ensures that the book informs and educates. It is rigorous without being inaccessible, comprehensive without being superficial, and critical without being dismissive. In terms of its audience, it will be a valuable resource for students, researchers, and practitioners alike, and stands as one of the clearest and most intellectually honest treatments of individual differences research.'
Professor Christopher Jackson, University of New South Wales, Australia.
'The fifth edition of Prof. Cooper's indispensable text on Individual Differences, Personality and Intelligence is an essential addition to the library of anyone working in the field. Students will benefit from the thorough coverage and professionals will appreciate the up-to-date compendium of information on the full breadth of pertinent topics in a single comprehensive volume.'
Professor Robert Krueger, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, University of Minnesota, USA.
This outstanding fifth edition offers a rare combination of conceptual clarity, methodological depth, and intellectual ambition. It guides the reader through the complexity of personality, abilities, and motivation with remarkable coherence, while continually inviting critical reflection. What makes this book truly distinctive is how it brings together theory, measurement, and real-world applications into a unified vision of individual differences. An essential and inspiring resource for anyone seeking to understand not just how people differ, but why those differences matter.
