Recenzii
Expanding actors beyond conventional definitions of states brings in new challenges, but Lemke's book shows the payoff from challenging conventions. It also inspires new avenues for research and demonstrates the value of actually collecting new data over relying on assumptions about implications.
The book is meticulous in its presentation of definitions, theories, methods, and results. It is well written and readable. The quantitative analysis is well done, though more discussion of specific cases that illustrate the findings would strengthen the study. In the end, the book makes a valuable contribution to the existing literature on state death, but its call to rethink the state in international relations may be its most important contribution.

Notă biografică
Douglas Lemke is Professor of Political Science at Pennsylvania State University. He studies international relations with particular focus on the interaction of conflict and the development of states. He is a "forest" rather than "tree" person, in that his intellectual orientation guides him toward commonalities across levels of development, regional settings, types of states, and types of wars. Professor Lemke earned his doctorate at Vanderbilt University, has held faculty positions at Florida State University, the University of Michigan, and Pennsylvania State University, and has mentored many undergraduate and graduate students. He has published 23 articles, 8 chapters, and 4 books, either as solo-authored works or collaborations with many co-authors.
