The elderly population is rapidly increasing is size as a result of the ageing of the baby boomers following the Second World War. Since there is a greater morbidity and mortality with advanced age, it is not surprising that this group is becoming a major consumer of health care resources. Most of the organ systems of the body undergo significant changes during the ageing process and the gastrointestinal system is no exception.
