Frontier Signatures

Bordered by three nuclear powers—India, Pakistan and China—Kashmir is both an archive and laboratory for colonial formations, where aspirations for self-determination remain deferred through military rule. This book takes readers into the bazaars, trade routes, and market relationships in Kashmir to tell a different story about everyday life in one of the world's most militarized regions. Based on more than a decade of detailed anthropological and historical research, the book shows how bazaars become a critical site where political and economic power is contested and sovereignty is reimagined. Aditi Saraf uses "signatures" to refer to distinctive trading legacies that craft dissident notions of exchange, credit, taxation, and ownership. She demonstrates how these signatures, and the converging forces that shape them, constitute places figured as "frontiers"— indeterminate borderlands that form at the restless edges of capitalist expansion and geopolitical conflict. By blending the study of trade with anthropological examinations of colonial violence and geopolitical history, this book offers new theoretical tools for understanding how market practices reshape contested terrain worldwide.
