Freeing Up Our Future: A Field Guide to Systemic Intelligence, Leadership and Practice

Autor Edward Rowland
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 23 sep 2026
In a world of increasing complexity and disruption, many change efforts stall or have only surface impact, as they 'bypass' or overlook the deeper patterns holding systems back. These patterns often stem from the unresolved past.
Freeing Up Our Future introduces a new lens — systemic intelligence — a powerful, practical way to perceive and work with the hidden architecture and dynamics of human systems. Drawing on over 20 years of practice, 4,000 case studies and over 90 client stories, this is both a field guide that blends insights with hands-on application, and a learning companion for leadership development and systemic coaching with constellations.
Rather than driving change through force or strategy alone, this guide helps leaders and change-makers reveal the hidden patterns beneath problems and attune to the natural order of systems — to restore flow, coherence, and harness their potential. It explores the capabilities and ways of being that leaders now need, and offers practical tools for systemic partnering, to support transformation across individuals, teams, organizations and ecosystems.
Whether you are a leader, manager, coach, or simply curious, this inspiring and pragmatic book will help you co-create the conditions for healthier, more purposeful systems to unfold — and free up a future where people and the planet can flourish together.

Recenzii

"Having been introduced to systemic intelligence and constellations in late 2020, I found this book as revealing, intriguing, and challenging as the approach. Freeing Up Our Future is essential reading for both newcomers and experienced practitioners of this innovative approach. The book’s three-part structure allows readers to dip in and out of its sections while systematically guiding them through self-exploration, theory, and real-world applications. It illuminates the modern lens of constellations and provides a compelling method for understanding leadership in an ever-changing world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and gained valuable insights from its pages." Fiona Taylor, former CEO, UK NHS Integrated Care Board
"This is an important book. Systemic constellations are a powerful practice that accelerate the shift in consciousness urgently needed by those working on systems evolution. Freeing Up Our Future de-veils the mystery of this work, offering deep insight into the immense support and transformative potential that it offers us. For those who believe that we can move beyond extractive economic and social systems toward a regenerative future, this book provides invaluable guidance on how systemic intelligence can support that transition." Jenny Andersson, Regenerative Designer, Founder of The Really Regenerative Centre CIC
"This brilliant and timely book offers a gateway into perceiving and experiencing the hidden field of systemic intelligence. Whether we are aware of it or not, this field of energetic relatedness is intrinsic to life, always at work, and ready to reveal what is. In my experience, this approach holds immense potential for healing — mending what has become fractured, resolving what has been buried out of sight (sometimes for generations), and liberating the deep affection that reconnects us to wholeness. What could possibly be more valuable than that?" David Adams, Chair, H3Uni
“Whether you are new to exploring systems or an experienced practitioner, this book provides both a map of the ordering forces and practical ways to explore them. You can skim and understand the basics, or dive deeply in, with exercises and questions to support you. There are human stories and insights throughout. I loved reading it, and am sure I will return to it again and again! A must for anyone looking to lead, understand or implement human and organisation change”. Karena Starkie-Gomez, Director and Global Client Lead for Leadership and Executive Development, KPMG | Chartered Psychologist | ChMC

"In Freeing Up Our Future, the authors have generated rare, essential content. In this elegant and practical guide, they introduce the necessity of understanding and incorporating systemic intelligence in business, communities and daily life. This is a revolutionary handbook for our times, and a must read for those willing to broaden their capacity to engage more effectively and fully with life.
Just as emotional intelligence became a necessary conversation for those in leadership. social, and commerce related fields, this book brings systemic intelligence to the fore — as an essential resource, a practical approach, intervention, and solution.
Including their personal journeys and reflections, as well as professional disciplines, the authors invite us into an experiential work that gently expands our assumptions. Through pragmatic exercises, each with concrete benefit in embodiment and broadening our skill set, we also become well versed in systemic constellations.  We are left with a bold measure of hope. A wonderful book — needed and magnificent." Francesca Mason Boring, Facilitator and Author, Connecting to Our Ancestral Past
“As leaders — especially in heavily disrupted environments — it's hard to find a way forward that meets the demands placed on us to deliver results, and also allows us to act with compassion and understanding. It feels like we are ships in a stormy sea, each and every day. So, this book and approach have come at just the right time for me. It’s like a lighthouse showing us a way to go! It’s rare to find a book that balances a strong theoretical underpinning, with genuinely practical tips and exercises, all written in an easily accessible way” Jamie Cooke, GM Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East: Warner Bros. Discovery
“The systemic intelligence illuminated in this book has profoundly transformed my approach to leadership. I now have access to a practical, incisive method for revealing the unseen forces that create stuckness or confusion in my organization — offering clear pathways to greater flow and alignment.
Having studied with Ed in person, I longed for a way to bring these teachings to my US colleagues. This book beautifully threads the needle between inviting readers into a new worldview and providing a grounded, actionable approach to leading within complexity. The authors’ deep expertise and love for this work will take anyone interested in leading change on a riveting deep dive into the power of systemic intelligence.
As a change practitioner in the U.S., I believe this work has never been more urgent. It offers a healing antidote to the division, individualism, and overwhelming complexity that pervade our organizations, governments, and communities.” Amelia Terrapin, Founder of Mobius Method; systemic coach, and former professional dancer/choreographer
"As an inheritor of an ancient Scottish Royal estate, Edward Rowland’s skilful coaching and facilitation of constellations has helped me to really see, understand and work with Falkland’s complex, sometimes entangled, history. The work has enabled me to discover my true purpose and right place here, as we change tack and adopt more regenerative practices for the sake of the future. So, the arrival of this book is a gift to resource me, and our leadership team, as we realise the potential of this place". Ninian Stuart, Centre for Stewardship, Falkland Estate.
"Freeing Up Our Future is both timely and necessary. It is a compelling guide to accessing systemic intelligence, a capacity that feels increasingly vital in the face of today’s organisational, social, and ecological crises. At its heart is a profound shift in worldview, inviting us to see organisations not as machines, but to sense them as living systems shaped by hidden relational dynamics. It brings together conceptual clarity, personal reflection, and practical tools with warmth and humility. It highlights the interconnectedness of personal history, institutional life, and broader ecosystems, framing leadership not as control, but as attunement. For those seeking to lead regeneratively, this book offers not just insights, but invitations. It reminds us that purpose and wholeness are not decorative ideals, but the architecture of systems that thrive." Sitna Quiroz Urla, PhD. Anthropologist, Assistant Professor, University of Durham.
"Freeing Up Our Future takes a novel approach to change by focusing on understanding the systems that all leaders, coaches and change agents experience in any transformation process. The authors explore what provides people sense of purpose, belonging, and meaning; highlights the importance of reflective dialogue; and then uses stories, case studies and exercises to help leaders bring about meaningful change.
This is a well written and timely book for an era of rapid change, and the stories and case studies bring the theory alive. This is a must read for those involved in leadership roles or supporting change." Professor Sir Cary Cooper, Professor of Organizational Psychology & Health, Alliance Manchester Business School & co-author of How to be the Line Manager you Never Had (Routledge, 2025)
"Reading this book was truly a pleasure; it’s insightful, thought-provoking, and full of stories that stay with you. For anyone who wants to lead with purpose, support others in meaningful ways, and create lasting, authentic change, it offers clear frameworks, practical tools, and inspiring examples that awaken a deeper, systemic awareness. It invites us to see beyond linear thinking and embrace a more relational, systemic perspective; one that unlocks greater impact, moves past quick fixes, and makes true transformation possible.  A useful handbook to keep on one's shelf and return to often!" Sandra Katakalea, Leadership Development Specialist, Humanitarian Sector
"There is a major shift underway in business — from seeing organizations as machines to recognising them as emergent living systems. This shift calls for new and very different ways of leading and working, aligned with the deeper relational and systemic dynamics of organizational life.
Building on their previous work, Ed and Deborah take this further in Freeing Up Our Future, exploring how systemic intelligence and constellations work can help leaders navigate complexity, attune more fully to the living systems they are part of, and nurture regeneration. Their approach is timely, practical, and deeply needed in today’s volatile and complex world. I highly recommend this insightful and accessible approach for anyone seeking to lead with greater wisdom and responsiveness." Giles Hutchins, author of Leading By Nature and Regenerative Leadership
