Some people spend their whole lives trying to find themselves. David Watson spent years running from himself.
FORWARD ONLY is the true story of a boy raised by his grandparents in small-town Texas whose life changed forever when the man he looked up to most-his grandfather-died when David was twelve.
What began as grief became restlessness, rebellion, and eventually a life defined by running. As a teenager, David crossed state lines, encountered law enforcement, spent time in juvenile custody, and began a journey that would eventually carry him across states and countries and into circumstances he could never have imagined as a child.
There were arrests. Jail cells. A prison in the Bahamas. A jail in Mexico. Years in federal prison. And losses that could no longer be escaped.
But FORWARD ONLY isn't simply a story about crime or incarceration.
It is a memoir about what happens before the headlines-the childhood, grief, decisions, fear, ambition, and search for belonging that can shape a life one choice at a time. David doesn't ask the reader to excuse his decisions. He confronts them, along with the consequences they created for himself and the people who loved him.
At its heart is the relationship between a boy and the grandparents who gave him a home, particularly the grandfather whose death left a void David spent years trying to outrun.
From rural Texas to life on the run, from foreign jail cells to federal prison, and ultimately to the difficult work of rebuilding, FORWARD ONLY is a story of family, loss, consequences, accountability, second chances, and redemption.
Because eventually, there is nowhere left to run.
The only direction left is forward.
